Salento Retreat

About

Manuela Siegfried is the founder of Retreat Salento, a certified forest bathing and nature connection guide based in Salento, Puglia. After more than five years as Training Director for an international nature therapy organization, she now leads small-group wellness retreats from her home in Southern Italy — retreats grounded in breathwork, sound healing, and deep connection with the land.

My Story

I was born and raised in Costa Rica, the daughter of Swiss immigrants. I grew up in nature, always outside, surrounded by trees, dogs and birds. Passionate about hiking, the ocean, scuba diving and finding joy in the simple things. I feel so grateful for the life lived so far. Grateful for the partner that was my companion for over 20 years, grateful for my two wonderful children, Diego and Alana, that have been my source of inspiration and for all the dogs that have supported me along the way.

Following my passion I became a certified forest bathing (Nature connection) facilitator and later on I took a course in sound healing. Breathwork has also been one of my strongest tools to achieve big and important changes inside of me. I started offering transformational retreats incorporating these and other modalities, always in collaboration with nature.

Now, a new chapter in my life has begun. I felt the need to make a radical change in my life, in search of my own happiness, more in alignment with my goals and dreams.

Some call it a midlife crisis; I call it midlife awakening. It’s a choice, a decision that is not easy, but I had to listen and follow my heart, to be in real alignment with the life I am looking for.

I had always wanted to live near the sea, in a small town; Italy has always been a country that has been in my heart, not sure why. When my children left the house in search of their own path, I decided to give it a try and come to the deep south of Italy, the Salento, southern Puglia, to brush up my Italian.

I fell in love with this place, with its pace, the delicious simplicity of homemade meals, the kindness and hospitality of its people, and the power of the ancestral rhythm of the tambourine that is used in the Pizzica music and dance.

This place felt like home the moment I set foot in it. It was almost as if I was already imagining this place. I decided to move here and start a new chapter of my life here.

Chill summer days at the sea, swimming and snorkeling in the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Sea, followed by relaxing resting on the rocks in the sun. The fall has its own magic, incredible cloud formations over the flat land which allows a 360 degree view, the most intense rainbows I have ever seen, and even saw my first white rainbow (something I was not even aware existed.), rainy days, a very special light and an intense green of the landscape, we will see what gifts winter brings.

UPDATE: Winter was amazing and powerful in its own way. The rhythm slowed down even more. People naturally stayed inside. The sea showed another face from time to time. Powerful, intense storms, the Adriatic showing what it is capable of. I couldnt believe that such a calm sea could become something so different. It was fascinating to watch the huge waves wash over the streets. It was a good reminder of the power of nature and a humbling experience. I liked the winter very much.

Spring was out of this world. Wildflowers everywhere!
Each day there was a new color in the fields, becoming this amazing mix of colors. April and May are my favorite months so far. There are not many people around, the temperature is amazingly pleasant, the sea is chilly and the colors are just mesmerizing. It’s been almost a year since I decided to come live here definitely and I haven’t regretted my decision. I feel more and more at home here, settling into the calm and the slow pace here.
